This scoping study is a foundation assessment by the Introducing Measures, Pathways, and Roadmaps for Optimising Vehicle Efficiency and Electrification (IMPROVE) project. The study aims to support Thai policymakers in selecting the best suited regulatory instruments to enhance vehicle efficiency in one of the world’s leading automotive production bases such as Thailand.
The study provides a comprehensive overview of Thailand’s vehicle market and existing fuel economy policy landscape by describing the regulatory framework and identifying key stakeholders. Policy gaps are pinpointed through the analysis of the current measures. While Thailand has already implemented several fuel economy initiatives, the study highlights opportunities for improvement, particularly in setting fuel economy standards, whose implementation is hindered by inter-agency fragmentation.
Building on these insights, the study presents potential regulatory pathways to enhance vehicle efficiency in Thailand. These findings serve as a foundation for policy discussions, helping to shape informed and effective measures for a more sustainable automotive future.
The IMPROVE project is funded by the International Climate Initiative (IKI) and commissioned by the German Federal Ministry for the Environment (BMUV).
