Net-Zero Roadmap for the Transport Sector in Vietnam

Summary Report

The summary report, Net-Zero Roadmap for the Transport Sector in Vietnam, focuses on the rapidly increasing demand for transport in Vietnam and outlines critical strategies for developing sustainable infrastructure. The report presents three future scenarios—Business As Usual (BAU), Nationally Implemented (DOM) and Net-Zero (NET) scenario—to model potential outcomes for the sector. By offering a detailed analysis of these development pathways, the publication provides essential recommendations for reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and achieving net-zero emissions by 2050, aligning with Vietnam’s National Strategy on Climate Change.

One of the key findings highlights that, under the Net-Zero Scenario, GHG emissions could be reduced by 88.9% by 2050 compared to the DOM Scenario, which would see emissions continue to rise. The report also emphasizes the importance of an energy transition in the transport sector as a critical step towards achieving the target, proposing a shift from fossil fuels to green energy sources such as electricity, hydrogen, Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAF), and others. The roadmap is vital for policymakers, businesses, and other stakeholders aiming to advance Vietnam’s sustainable transport solutions. It comprehensively analyzes energy demand and supply, confirming that green energy needs are manageable within national thresholds. This publication offers a forward-looking framework to help shape Vietnam’s long-term sustainable transport policies and investments.
