ReLiFE: A Circular Solution for Lithium-Ion Batteries in Mexico

Enabling a Circular Solution for the Future Lithium and Rechargeable Battery Technologies

The ReLiFE Project aims to establish the technical and regulatory framework conditions to build a safe, transparent and environmentally friendly system for the treatment and recycling of Li-ion batteries in Mexico. To achieve this objective, it is vital to create strong cross-sectoral collaborations with the automotive industry, local actors for waste collection and management, electrical and electronic equipment companies, local government and academia to promote a circular battery management ecosystem.

The project is commissioned by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and implemented by GIZ, in partnership with FORTECH Circular Group as the main private sector partner.

The project focuses on establishing the core elements of a circular lithium-ion battery system in Mexico, with the following expected results:

  • Implementation of international best practices in sustainable battery treatment and recycling processes.
  • Development of reverse logistics and battery collection mechanisms to enable safe and transparent end-of-life management.
  • Advancement of applied research on second-life applications for electric vehicle batteries in collaboration with industry and academia.
  • Improved regulatory coordination through multi-stakeholder dialogue and the development of circular economy guidelines.
