The Evolution of Heavy-duty Vehicles in China

A retrospective evaluation of CO2 and pollutant emissions from 2012 to 2021

This analysis examines the development of heavy-duty vehicles (HDVs) across six vehicle segments, focusing on key characteristics such as curb weight, engine power, fuel consumption/CO₂ emissions, and tailpipe NOx emissions. Based on the findings, key policy recommendations include:

Include Utility Vehicles – Fully integrate utility vehicles (10% of China’s HDV market) into future fuel standards for broader energy coverage.

Adopt GHG Emissions Standards – Shift from fuel consumption to GHG regulation to include more pollutants (e.g., N₂O, CH₄), improve public transparency, and guide long-term industry planning.
