How Efficient are Kenya’s Cars?

Baseline Assessment of Light-Duty Vehicle Fuel Economy and CO₂ Emissions for newly registered vehicles in Kenya between 2010-2023

This publication analyses Kenya’s light-duty vehicle fleet to establish a fuel economy baseline and examine vehicle efficiency trends and their implications for energy use and emissions. It reviews the current policy and regulatory framework and benchmarks international best practices to inform discussions on vehicle efficiency improvement in Kenya. The study is intended for policymakers, regulators, transport and energy agencies, and development partners involved in vehicle regulation and sustainable transport. By reading this report, stakeholders gain an evidence-based understanding of Kenya’s vehicle efficiency performance, policy gaps, and practical policy options to reduce fuel consumption, emissions, and costs while aligning with international commitments.
