Bangkok is a vibrant city that has grown immensely in the past several decades. As one of the economic and cultural hubs in Southeast Asia with more than 10 million people and a growing middle class. Bangkok faces a lot of mobility challenges, one of the main challenges is traffic congestion. For decades, this has been causing impatience and inconvenience for city dwellers who have to spend an excessive amount of time trying to reach their destinations. Also, due to the heavy congestion in Bangkok, the city is full of air pollution.
A great amount of effort has been put into addressing the matter through the work of various plans to deal with the root cause of the issue. The Office of Transport and Traffic Policy and Planning (OTP) has collaborated with GIZ under the TRANSfer project and to which they have worked together on several measures reflected under the comprehensive “Thai Clean Mobility Programme (TCMP)”. One of the crucial long-term measures prioritized by OTP is the congestion charging scheme. As it is crucial to reduce congestion, shift mobility demand from individual car travel to public transportation, as well as to reduce air pollution in heavy traffic congestion zones.
