Objective
In Asia and the Pacific, cities are experiencing both continued expansion, changing demographics and rising motorization rates, leading to accelerated transport emissions that present a major challenge to climate and development goals. Asia and the Pacific alone account for nearly 30% of transport emissions globally, with a projected 94% increase by 2050 if current trends in urban passenger and freight transport continue.
Additionally, a continued reliance on fossil fuels is driving these emissions and many cities in the region remain dominated by private vehicle use, with public transport systems often underfunded, fragmented, or poorly integrated. Walking, cycling, and informal transport are also critical for underserved communities but are frequently overlooked in formal planning and infrastructure investment.
Cities therefore play a pivotal role in addressing the increasing emissions and inevitable climate adaptation costs through sustainable and climate-resilient urban planning and development. Contemporary urban planning concepts such as “15-minute cities” – models that promote compact, accessible, and inclusive neighborhoods – can be adapted to local social and spatial realities across Asia and the Pacific and significantly contribute to the transition to equitable, low-carbon and resilient cities2. Investments in electric public transport and non-motorized transport infrastructure also offer significant co-benefits, including improved air quality, equity and inclusion, and urban liveability. However, systemic barriers remain, including siloed governance, limited capacity for integrated planning, and financing gaps.
This webinar will explore emerging policy, planning, and financing solutions for advancing low-carbon inclusive, and resilient urban transport in Asia and the Pacific. Expert speakers and city representatives from various sectors and organizations will engage in discussions with participants and present key insights and case studies on innovations and practical pathways for implementation, including economic incentives and revenue-generating opportunities for local governments.
