Rwanda

GIZ is implementing several activities in close collaboration with the Rwandan government, as well as the private sector and Academia. The overall objective of these activities is to support the development of sustainable transport systems, in particular e-mobility and public transport, and to accelerate their decarbonization.

Currently, two projects are being implemented by GIZ,
Mobilize Net-Zero: GIZ is supporting Rwanda’s Ministry of Infrastructure on its path to electrify and decarbonize public transportation in secondary/satellite cities, as well as in intercity and rural areas.
Key activities under planning and implementation are 1) pre-feasibility study on public transport fleet electrification ; 2) capacity needs asssessment of district governments and regulatory authorities and 3) development of project concept to support public transport electrification.
In addition, Mobilize Net-Zero is supporting the Rwandan government in the development of the Transport Sector Strategic Plan for the upcoming 4 years, and Guidelines to mainstream the country’s NDC commitments in the transport sector.
Smart Mobility Lab: GIZ is collaborating with the private sector (Volkswagen, Kabisa, PEM Motion, EnrouteQ), academia (Carnegie Mellon University Africa) and civil society (Trufi Association), to promote the uptake of electric mobility and digitalize public transport services in Kigali.
Key activities are the : 1) development of trainings on e-mobility repairs and maintenance ; 2) organization of awareness raising campaigns ; 3) data collection and mapping of the public transport network (GTFS static and real-time) ; 4) development of an open source application for public transport users ; 5) publication of GTFS data in google maps ; and
6) capacity building to regulatory authorities and public transport operators on operations control and introduction of scheduled services.
