This is Europe’s major strategic planning instrument for authorities to develop and implement a long-term sustainable mobility plan.
It is packaged in an easy-to-read manual that is targeted beyond politicians and planning practitioners. This is the seminal SUMP resource to help active participants and planners achieve balanced and integrated planning between various levels of governance, led from the city-level.
The guidelines provide a comprehensive step-by-step description of the SUMP implementation and co-creation process. It provides associated activities, aims, task descriptions, guidance on timing and coordination, and how to address the involvement of regional and national government structures that delineate the legal frameworks within which a SUMP functions.
Its annexes include checklists, topic guides and briefings that are based on SUMP processes. The 2.0 update now includes long-term impacts and considerations of newly introduced technologies to urban mobility and instructs what mobility adaptations are necessary to a local situation that work in accordance with their policies.
All-in-all this resource advises on how cities and national actors can benefit from a SUMP when actors are fairly included in the creation process.
