Retesting and Reuse of Lithium-Ion Batteries and Research into Battery Shredding – Enviroserve Kenya Limited

This study evaluated the testing, reuse, and recycling potential of lithium-ion batteries in Kenya’s emerging e-mobility and clean energy sectors. Over 13,000 kg of batteries from diverse applications were tested, with approximately 4,900 kg successfully repurposed for second-life use while retaining up to 80% of original capacity. The project demonstrated viable reuse in light electric vehicles and stationary energy storage and confirmed the technical and economic feasibility of small-scale battery shredding and material recovery suited to Kenya’s regulatory context. The findings demonstrate that structured testing, robust safety standards, and phased recycling models can deliver both environmental and economic benefits while enabling circular battery systems to scale in step with market growth.
