Bus fleet modernization, irrespective of the technology considered, goes in hand with considerable funding needs and is usually linked to several financing instruments and stakeholders. However, conventional financing schemes may be insufficient in some contexts such as the electrification of bus fleets due to the high upfront costs.
This report therefore aims to shed light on the financial mechanisms that can be made available to operators in order to facilitate the electrification of their fleets. The overview includes information on non-reimbursable funds like grants or tax breaks, on investment capital and on legal arrangements like leasing options and “Pay-as-you-save” models.
