Leapfrogging to Zero Emission Transport (LEAP)

Africa is at the start of a steep motorisation curve. Increasing numbers of imported internal combustion vehicles are leading to rising oil imports, air pollution and emissions.

Kenya, Senegal and South Africa are keen to promote e-mobility, establish local value chains for electric vehicles and create jobs. The LEAP project accelerates the electrification of vehicle fleets by establishing climate-aware, gender-responsive and regionally harmonised frameworks to enable e-mobility.

By accelerating the transition towards e-mobility, the LEAP project increases the potential for renewable energy in transport. Increasing the share of electric vehicles amid Africa’s rapid motorisation can significantly reduce emissions compared to a surge in conventional vehicle use.
